2mhost Sucked my .com out, now I’m going .Net

Screw this, I’m going .Net!!! … As in http://www.rvdavid.net that is. Due to a mishap which resulted in my domain name being held hostage by my old host 2mhost, I’ve decided to forget about the .com domain and shift to .net!

It’s been a dark couple of weeks, but now that there’s light at the end of the tunnel and the dust has settled, what emerges from the ashes is the my new domain rvdavid.net. It’s a long story but I’ll tell the tale for those who want to read. Continue on to quickly review the way that 2mhost, the cheap web hosting company, services with customers.

update: I noticed that they have added a “why am I seeing this website?” link which is a mailto link to enom’s whois-help.info. Just so it’s known, my gripe is not because my domain has expired. What makes this thing sour for me is that 2mhost had/is deliberately ignoring my attempts to contact them to achieve the resolution that I as a once paying customer deserve. - At the time, I coudln’t access the rvdavid.com domain through enom since 2mhost is the registered reseller - no other routes to take aside from dealing with 2mhost directly - who don’t answer my emails - am I asking them to bend over backwards? no way! but ffs guys, respond to emails.

You had no problems replying to emails when I was a brand new sale! anyway… the story goes…

I’ve _finally_ parted ways with the cheap but _unreliable_ 2mhost. Although they had minimised their downtime, I still caught the sporadic could not connect to site error here and there. As if it were timing - to their credit, they are getting their operation together and becoming more and more stable on the tail end of my one year stint with them.

You want cheap? yeah they’re your guys… somewhat reliable. for what you pay for, but anyway, that’s behind me now. I’m now runnin’ my site off a dedicated RHEL5 server on “the planet” FKA “EV1″ FKA “rack shack”.

rvdavid.net has come to fruition due to my tunnel vision and not thinking ahead. During the past months, I’ve decided to slowly work my data over to our dedicated server over at “the planet” - suddenly I receive this “last chance to renew” email from 2mhost after receiving a couple more earlier in the week.

It annoyed me a little as I was deep in the development trenches at the time and as some of you may know, focus when you are in this frame of mind is fragile, so fragile that even the smallest peep from your pc speaker to indicate that email has arrived can derail you.

So I check the email and it’s sales@2mhost.com. I thought “man screw this. I’muh cancel it - *click* - I can just transfer my domain to a registrar of my choosing and manage it on my own” … I continue to work on devscripts.

Later that night, finished work and finished cookin’, I thought “it was time to transfer my domain”. As I did a quick search for my domain registration details, I realised that I did not have my authentication code - for those who do not know, no auth code, means you cannot transfer.

I’ve sent about 5 emails to sales@2mhost to acquire my domain auth code to transfer my domain name, but well, they still haven’t replied. I think it’s a rather petty and unprofessional attitude to take. It’s like they’re punishing me for not staying with them by ignoring my emails. I guess it just goes to show what kind of company they are.

So I apologise for those who may have gone to my old site and found a smirking backpacker looking back at them. You may safely delete that site from your bookmarks. You can now find me on rvdavid.net

Sad really, I was at one stage considering being a reseller for 2mhost and before then, start pointing my new clients to their servers even after they embarassed me with their unreliability last year when I had recommended them to a client of mine who suffered sporadic web server downtimes and could not receive email for days…

Nah, I wasn’t really going to, I was just saying that to try and rub in that they’ve lost a “huge” _50 bucks_ worth of business and a reseller deal - I’m sure they care and are not just thinking “onto the next sucker” :P
Don’t think that I’m biased _KNOW_ that I am biased - my bias is consistent with anyone who gets screwed over by their webhost. You wanna run with 2mhost? Good luck. They’re going to screw you.
